Varve is one app with every feature, free and open source under AGPL-3.0. Sync between devices and team workspaces need a server, which is planned and lives in the same repository. Run it yourself for free, or let us host it for a fee as Varve Cloud.

Licenses and hosting

What you can count on.

Is the app really free?

Yes. There is one app, Varve, free and open source under AGPL-3.0, with every feature. There is no paid edition, no locked menu item and no upgrade prompt.

Do I need a server?

No. The app works fully on its own. A server is only for sync between devices and team workspaces, and it is not built yet. You can run it yourself, or use Varve Cloud.

What will Varve Cloud cost?

The price is not set yet. Varve Cloud, our managed hosting, will be paid because it runs on our servers, and it is billed per organization (seats). Prices will be published here before it launches. Self-hosting stays free.

Why is Varve under AGPL-3.0?

The whole project, the app and the server, is AGPL-3.0, so it stays open when someone builds on it or runs it as a service. You can use it at work, change it, and run the server for your team for free. If you distribute a changed version, or offer one to others over a network, you share those changes under the same license.

Can I fork Varve and ship my own build?

Yes, the code is yours to fork. The name Varve and the year rings logo are trademarks and are not covered by the AGPL-3.0 license, so a fork needs its own name and icon. TRADEMARKS.md in the repository has the details.

How do I contribute?

Contributions are accepted under the Developer Certificate of Origin, so there is no CLA. CONTRIBUTING.md in the repository explains the rest.
